Pali Literature

Pali Literature of Ceylon, Pali Literature of Burma, and Pali Literature of S.E. Asia
By: G.P. Malalasekera, Mabel Haynes Bode, and Ven. Hammalawa Saddhātissa
This volume contains three classical works that cover the history of Pali literature in Sri Lanka, Burma and Southeast Asia.

In the first work in this collection, The Pali Literature of Ceylon, Dr. Malalasekera surveys Sri Lanka’s rich heritage of Pali Buddhist literature. Beginning with the story of the Sinhala people’s conversion to the Doctrine of the Buddha, the author traces the development of Sri Lanka’s Pali literature from its origins, through the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruva periods, down to the early twentieth century. Since the history of the island, its Buddhist faith, and its Pali literature are inseparably intertwined, his book is at the same time a gracefully written history of Sri Lanka as reflected in its literary heritage.

The second book in this collection, The Pali Literature of Burma by Dr. Mabel Bode, is a detailed and readable survey of the Pali literature composed in Burma. It covers the first Pali works composed in the twelfth century up to the works of the Ledi Sayadaw in the early twentieth century.

In articles contained in the third book, The Pali Literature of Southeast Asia, Ven. Dr. Hammalawa Saddhatissa surveys the Pali literature of Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.
